Embracing Chaos and Finding My Why {Lifestyle Photographer, Seattle WA}

If you've been following me for a while, you'll know that I've changed direction in the last few months. My family shoots used to take place in many of the beautiful beaches and parks that we are lucky enough to have in Seattle. Lately, I've been doing mostly in home sessions although, I will still offer a few outdoor sessions at the end of summer/beginning of fall. My photography journey is like any other journey. There have been high points and low points, and times when I felt I needed to pivot and head in a new direction. In home lifestyle photography really speaks to me and I feel so confident with this decision. I'm excited to see where it takes me!

Three years ago, I purchased an e-book all about lifestyle photography. The day I got it, I sat down and read the whole thing all at once and I was immediately inspired to start taking pictures of my kids. Until then, I had always tried to get a "perfect" shot of them. You know, in a cute outfit, against a studio looking wall or at a beautiful outdoor location. My youngest at the time was sleeping so I crept into his room and took the image below. It's not the best image, but this was the turning point for me. This is how I wanted to capture my kids. Just them being them.

Sleeping child, seattle wa I started documenting our days more authentically and I loved the results. I truly felt like I was capturing their childhood in the most beautiful way. I would spend ages looking over their images and hoping that one day, they would look back on them and see how I saw them and how much I loved them. A couple of months later, I started my business. I was photographing families in outdoor locations and doing posed newborn sessions. I was happy with my work but it was completely different in style to my personal work. I saw the difference but I assumed that it was normal for your client work and your personal work to be different.

One year after that picture was taken, I flew out to Ohio to photograph my friend's newborn. Since I wasn't photographing in my own space with my posing beanbag and all my wraps and hats, we did a lifestyle session. I fell in love with it and decided that I would only do lifestyle newborn sessions from then. It was freeing in a way. I packed up my newborn props and happily started marketing lifestyle newborn sessions. I was thrilled with the response and finally felt happy with my newborn work. For almost two years, I would continue shooting in home lifestyle newborn sessions and outdoor family sessions. My family sessions were still somewhat lifestyle. I still had the parents interact and play with the kids rather than look and smile at the camera but they didn't have the same feel as my newborn sessions. After much soul searching, towards the end of last year, I decided to focus my energies on in home sessions. After my first one, I was 100% hooked and although I was nervous about making the official announcement, I was also confident because that's where my heart was.

So, that's my journey, but why is shooting in a lifestyle manner important to me? Like I said above, when I started shooting my kids in an authentic way, I could see the beauty of our family. I didn't need a perfect backdrop or a beautifully lit open field to see that. There was so much to love about our lives and I wanted to embrace that. I see that in your family too. I see the way your son is clinging to you and I will capture your closeness. I see your daughter who is so proud of her bedroom and I will capture her in that special space too. I feel that the whole family is more relaxed in their own home and because of that, we can get more genuine images and your love is going to shine through. There is so much love and heart in your home and a little bit of chaos thrown in too. I love to see you embrace that in order to get images that truly reflect your family.

If you're ready to start embracing your beautiful chaos, please get in touch. I would love to work with you!

And because a post wouldn't be complete without some images, here are some of my favorites, both personal and client work.
