Indoor or Outdoor Maternity Photos: Which Is Better?

If you’re expecting in Seattle and planning maternity photos, you’ve probably asked this one: should we do them inside or outside? The truth is, there’s no “better.” There’s only what feels right for you in this season. Let’s break down both so you can decide. 🌿

Indoor Maternity Photos: Cozy, Intimate, and Weather-Proof

Why families love them:

  • Comfort is everything: You’re in your own space. Need to sit, grab water, or take a break? No problem. Bare feet and your favorite robe are totally welcome.

  • Personal and meaningful: Your nursery, your couch, the spot where you and your partner read at night. These spaces tell your story in a way a park can’t.

  • Seattle-proof: Rain in the forecast? Doesn’t matter. We use soft window light and never have to reschedule.

  • Intimate vibe: In-home sessions feel quiet and connected. Perfect if you’re private or don’t love an audience.

Keep in mind: Homes with small windows or very little natural light can be trickier. I’ll help you pick the best rooms when we plan.

Outdoor Maternity Photos: Golden Light and Epic Scenery

Why families love them:

  • That PNW glow: Golden hour at Discovery Park, moody beaches, or cherry blossoms in spring. The scenery is hard to beat.

  • Space to move: If you want to walk, twirl in a flowy dress, or include your dog running through a field, outdoors gives us room.

  • Seasonal beauty: Summer evenings, fall leaves, or fresh spring greens all add something special to your gallery.

Keep in mind: We’re at the mercy of weather and light. Summer sunsets in Seattle are late, and fall sessions can be chilly. Public places also mean other people around.

So, Which Should You Choose?

Ask yourself these 3 questions:

  1. How do you want to feel? Cozy and snuggled in vs. adventurous and windswept.

  2. What matters most right now? Comfort and privacy, or dramatic scenery and golden light.

  3. What season is it? July vs. January in Seattle are two very different outdoor experiences.

You can also do both. Many clients book a short in-home session and add 20 minutes outside on their porch or in the backyard. We get the best of both worlds without the stress.

What if I Don't Feel Confident During Pregnancy Photos?

First, you’re not alone. Almost every mama I photograph in Seattle tells me she’s nervous about feeling awkward or “not photogenic” during her maternity session. Pregnancy is beautiful, but it’s also a lot. Your body is changing, you might feel swollen or tired, and the idea of being in front of a camera can feel vulnerable.

So let’s talk about it.

You Don’t Have to “Perform”

Lifestyle maternity sessions aren’t about perfect poses or sucking in. They’re about documenting this season exactly as it is. I’ll guide you into natural, comfortable moments—snuggling with your partner on the couch, hands on your belly in soft window light, laughing at a joke. No modeling experience required.

We Focus on Connection, Not Perfection

The best photos happen when you’re focused on your baby, your partner, or just breathing through the moment. I’ll help with gentle direction like “turn toward the light” or “rest your head on his shoulder.” You won’t be left wondering what to do with your hands. And if your toddler jumps in for a hug mid-shot? That’s the magic.

Wear What Makes You Feel Good

Confidence starts with comfort. Flowy dresses, soft knits, or even your favorite leggings all photograph beautifully. Bare feet, messy buns, and stretch marks are all welcome here. This isn’t about hiding the real parts of pregnancy. It’s about honoring them.

I’ve Got You

As a mom and a photographer, my job is to make you feel safe and seen. We go at your pace. Need to sit down, take a break, or change outfits? We will. I’ll show you a few images on the back of my camera during the session so you can see how gorgeous you look. Most clients leave saying “that was actually fun” and “I can’t believe that’s me.”

You’ll Never Regret Having These Photos

Your body is doing incredible work right now. Even if you don’t feel confident today, future you will be so grateful to have these memories. And your baby will love seeing what you looked like while they were growing.

Let’s Do This Together

If you’re in the Seattle area and feeling unsure about maternity photos, let’s chat. My sessions are relaxed and always focused on your comfort. Contact me today and we’ll create something beautiful together.

What's the Best Week of Pregnancy for Maternity Photos?

As a Seattle-based maternity photographer, I'm often asked, "When is the best time to take maternity photos?"

The sweet spot for maternity photos is typically between 28-36 weeks pregnant.

Why This Time Frame?

At this stage, you're likely feeling radiant and comfortable, but still have a beautiful baby bump to show off!

Here are a few reasons why this time frame works well:

- Comfort: You're likely still comfortable enough to move around and pose for photos.

- Bump: Your bump is prominent, but not so big that it's uncomfortable.

- Energy: You may be feeling more energetic than in the third trimester, making it easier to get through the session.

- Scheduling: Booking your session now ensures that we can get a spot on my calendar before the baby arrives!

Tips for Planning To make the most of your session, consider:

- Booking your session between 28-32 weeks for a more relaxed atmosphere

- Scheduling around your energy levels (e.g., morning sessions tend to be less tiring)

- Wearing comfortable, flattering clothing that accentuates your bump

Let's Celebrate You!
